Hello and welcome to Aprons Americana®. My name is Lisa and I’m the Founder and Owner.
I started Aprons Americana® in 2002 while I was working at my full time corporate job in Manhattan. I bought a couple of still-in-their-package cobbler aprons at one of the many wonderful estate sales in New Jersey and fell in love with their fun prints and functionality. Worried that I would “wear them out,” I had a couple of prototypes made and decided to launch my cobbler apron business. My sister Eleni thought of the name and designed the logo. Each apron is fully edged in almost 11 yards of bias tape. They are high quality and very durable. They are full coverage and I wipe my hands on the front and back of them. I use the two apron pockets for my ipod, tissue, or as a place to put my hot peppers and tomatoes that I pick from my garden. Sometimes I wear them grocery shopping and it’s fun fun fun to talk to people about them!
I have the aprons made in Manhattan by fabulous people in the Garment District.
My mom used to make the coolest outfits for my sister and I. In the 3rd grade I wore a hot pink mohair vest and skirt that she made me, and outside at lunch there was a knat invasion and all the knats got stuck in my outfit! My mom taught me how to sew on a Singer sewing machine at an early age.
In 2006 I bought a Bernina sewing machine at Fabricland in New Jersey. I became interested in being greener and not using plastic or paper bags for grocery shopping. And how fun would it be to shop with grocery bags made of fun prints? I made a couple prototypes of cloth grocery bags that were the same size as paper grocery bags. These bags are made with new and vintage fabric. They hold a lot of groceries and my friends and I love using them because we are not using plastic or paper. My grocery bags are also made in Manhattan. You can read more about them on the Grocery Bag page.
After working in Manhattan for 17 years, my family and I decided to change our lifestyle. At the beginning of 2008 we packed up the belongings of our Victorian house and moved to the Madison, Wisconsin area. We love it here!
I have also been taking pictures for years and will be selling my photos soon at www.lisadiamondphotography.com. I started taking photos when I was 10 with a Kodak camera. When I was 16 I decided I wanted a 35mm camera, and my friend Jeff told me his cousin was selling his Minolta SRT-101, so I bought it! I became crazy about photography. I have spent most of my life working in the photography industry. My favorite style of photography is black and white with natural lighting. The photographers who influenced me while growing up in Los Angeles are Diane Arbus, Elliott Erwitt, Helmut Newton, Francesco Scavullo, Richard Avedon, and Irving Penn. I can also be commissioned to take your portrait.
I have lived in Tucson, Los Angeles, Manhattan, and South Orange, New Jersey. I have always loved pop culture. I bought my first Beatles album when I was 7. I love music, fashion and celebrities. My earliest days were spent looking at VOGUE, SEVENTEEN, and TIGER BEAT. I love the 1950's and 1960's, India print bedspreads, Lilly Pulitzer, and Vera Neumann.
I would really appreciate your support in buying my products. Please forward my site to your friends! I look forward to hearing from you!
